Frequently Asked Questions
What is Advice Only Financial Planning?
I am product-agnostic and client-empowering. I don’t sell or manage your assets, nor do I receive any compensation related to the financial products you own. Instead, I provide a holistic analysis of your finances—considering tax, estate, cash flow, risk, and more. I recommend registrations, allocations, strategies, and structures, and guide you on how and why to align your plan with your lawyer and accountant. You remain in control, managing your finances through your chosen asset manager(s) or a DIY platform.
How does it work?
Planning meetings are held on Zoom, with me sharing my screen. There are typically at least four meetings: Introduction, Discovery, Analysis, and Action Plan. You’ll securely share documents with me through my client-access platform, and I’ll provide a detailed summary of key findings and recommendations after each session. We share secure access to your analysis and plan, and we can call, text, or email as needed between meetings.
How much does it cost?
If your needs fit one of my four core services, you can view the current pricing here. If your needs don’t quite fit those parameters, I’ll provide a written quote after our Introductory Meeting. You can choose to pay in two parts—upon engagement and upon completion—through a monthly payment plan, or a combination of both. Payments can be made via my credit card–based invoicing system or by e-transfer.
How long will this take?
Technically, the full process could be completed in as little as three weeks, but it more often takes at least a couple of months, with additional support as needed while you implement your plan. There are typically four meetings: Introductory, Discovery, Analysis, and Action Plan. I take about a week to analyze the requested documents and prepare for each meeting, though I reserve the right to take longer when necessary to ensure high-quality work. You’ll be asked to provide the required documents within four weeks of each request.
Can I retain on-going support?
Up to three months of support as you implement your plan is included with every initial engagement. Ongoing support is always available for a monthly or annual fee, quoted at the time of engagement. This continued service includes a full annual review and comprehensive update.
How did you move from Music and Journalism to Finance?
I used to think I was good with money because I was a skilled budget manager. As a self-employed freelancer with a private corporation and multiple interrelated small businesses—and later as a CBC Radio journalist—I had learned a lot about managing finances. Then, in my late thirties, I woke up newly married, with a baby and a mortgage, and couldn’t go back to sleep for fear of what could go wrong. I realized I didn’t know as much about money as I truly needed to. My investigative research instincts kicked in, but I quickly became overwhelmed by the sales pitches and biased framing of much of the public financial information available. It wasn’t until I met with a Financial Advisor that I began to gain the solid understanding I needed. That meeting sent me down a rabbit hole of learning that eventually led me to become a professional in the field—and a passionate advocate for helping others understand their finances better and feel empowered to plan wisely, sooner.
